CEYLON SPORTS CLUB ADD CUP TO LEAGUE TITLE

CSC tonight clinched the SHF Division 1 Cup Men’ Hockey Championship by beating Hollandse Club in a pulsating final that went all the way down to a penalty strokes after CSC and Hollandse Club were locked on one goal each.

From the start it was obvious that the match would be evenly match with the fast and artistic CSC against the power play of the Hollandse Clubs using the well tried and very successful man marking tactics. CSC who had not lost the entire season were find the going tough as the Hollandse players kept the game tight and did not allow the CSC players to play their flowing game. The CSC team lead by Favil and Farhan were kept at bay. In contrast CSC used the same tactics that brought them victory throughout the season by controlling the midfield and then breaking out fast to try and score. Hollandse Club countered the CSC tactics by good use of the long ball down the side lines to try and get in behind the tough CSC defence.

CSC took the lead in the first half through Favil when the umpire adjudged that one of the Hollandse Club player had deliberately checked the onrushing Favil in the ‘D’. The first half was controlled by CSC and at the end of half time the scored remained CSC 1 Hollandse Club 0.

"After beating Hollandse Club in our league match, we knew we had to stop them playing their long ball from the midfield and to close them down early and use our pace to get our goals" said very happy CSC captain after the final.

But Hollandse Club came out in the second half with all guns blazing and scored the equalizer in the 50th minute when a CSC defender failed to pick out the Hollandse player who reversed a beautiful pass the CSC custodian.

Both sides came close to scoring in the final stages of the game, although CSC came closest in the final minute with a deflection by Azrul from a fierce Sharudin cross that the Hollandse Keeper saved. Nizam also had hit the post earlier.

With the scored at 1-1 in normal time, neither side was able to find the winner during the extra time the game had to be decided by penalty strokes and it was CSC who held their nerve and won 4-2. Hollandse Club’s second stroke was first saved by CSC goal keeper Yong Chiang, With the score reading 3-2 Yong Chiang made another fantastic save and it was left for Sharuddin to put in the deciding flick into the corner and gave CSC the Cup. CSC custodian who had made two sub-line saves in the penalty shoot out, and was the hero of the CSC team.

CSC WINS AND ARE NOW UNCATCHABLE IN THE LEAGUE

CSC scored a narrow 1-0 win over NTU and secured an uncatchable lead in the Division 1 Men’s League 2007. With one game to play CSC have now won the title comfortably.

CSC got the first half underway with probing attacks and, their best chance for a score coming from a deflection by Rihua in front of the goal just a few minutes before the end of the first half which went just wide.

CSC had another good possession in the second half and got an opportunity to score after a good build up from Farhan and Favil that found Azrul, who was unable to find the back of the net.

The first and the winning goal came in the 61st minute, Azrul scoring from the free hit from the top of the ‘D’’. The next 15 minutes saw plenty of attack from CSC but to no avail, CSC seizing their best chance to score with just four minutes left on the clock when Farhan’s deflection of Aidil’s slap hit rocked the NTU goal post.

CSC captain was relieved to come away with a win. "I thought we were certainly challenged today. We played below our potential and didn't meet the challenge as we'll have to, maybe the ongoing school exams and the Muslim fasting month had something to do with it."

"I was pleased that we were able to dig deep in the second half to score and win the league title although there is one more game against SRC next Sunday."

CSC MARCH TOWARDS THE MEN’S DIVISION 1 TITLE

CSC marched into the final games with an authoritative 1-0 victory over a fighting Hollandse Club in the SHF Division 1 men’s hockey tournament here on a hot Sunday afternoon.

CSC who won their ninth straight match in the tournament, now faces NTU and SRC to win the title. Azrul struck for CSC in the first half after a shot by Farhan had been saved by the Hollandse Club goalie. CSC, who led 1-0 at half-time, put up another sterling performance as they dominated the proceedings throughout, but with the Hollandse goalie in outstanding form CSC were unable to increase the score.

With the season to end soon, CSC have 30 points from 9 games and unlikely to be overtaken. The title is as good as won.

VICTORY FOR CSC OVER KHALSA

CSC achieved a splendid 2-0 victory over Khalsa to keep its chances of winning the Men’s Division 1 League alive on Wednesday. The CSC men held all the aces and kept the Khalsa team under pressure throughout. Favil and Fasri were instrumental in the 2-0 win.

CSC had to wait till the 32 minute for its first goal by Fasri, the teams top scorer. The CSC goal-keepers, Khairulaman and Yong Chiang in the second half were mere spectators throughout the match. CSC were quite wasteful in this game had they been more lethal in front of goal the score could easily been in double figures.

Stunning goals

An early goal, and a stunning one at that, by Mohd Fazli, who lunged to deflect a rebound cross from NTU defender, shocked NTU team which could not recover from that blow and NTU was subjected to tremendous pressure by the CSC team for rest of the game.

CSC buoyed by the manner in which the lead was achieved, dominated the exchanges. With Fazli and Favil feeding the frontline well, the forwards, led well by Nizam and Azrul, caused panic in the rival defence.

When Sharudin pumped in a penalty corner to enlarge the lead, NTUs' chances of coming back looked remote. Helped by a few quick raids by Aidil and Prem, CSC swarmed the NTUs' area and forced a few penalty corners. After missing two, Izjzudin found the target with a splendid flick. The NTU team was desperate for a goal in the last five minutes but the search proved in vain and it was CSC which extended its lead to 4-0 at half time through forward Azrul.

In the second half CSC added three more goals through Aidil(drag flick), Prem and Captain Farhan to bring the final score to 7-0.

With another game later at night against a visiting UK team the CSC Women took their foot of the pedal and cruised to a comfortable 4-1 win.

Next week they play their last league game against SCC Lioness and needs to get a point to be confirmed National Division 1 Women champion 2007.

The coach was the happiest man on the field “We converted our chances and our passes were great to watch and we took the chances that were presented to us,” Coach Ralph said..

KING WILLIAMS’S COLLEGE JUNIORS TRIUMPH OVER CSC JUNIORS

The CSC Juniors were not so lucky and went down to the King Williams’s College Under -15 Girls 2-0. Both goals were scored of defencive lapses in first half. Having play a league game on the same morning the girls just could not handle the bigger UK girls.

“We had poor ball handling today and were very timid and as the match progressed, fatigue set in which is something we will have to look at for the future,” Coach Ralph said

CSC WIN SHF UNDER-15 TITLE WITH SABRINA BRACE

Ceylon Sports Club forward Sabrina, so often the scourge of teams, had another field day at Jansenite’s expense on the finals of the Girl’s Under-15 Finals at Delta Stadium on Thursday 21 June 2007.

She scored twice and set up numerous chances for he team mates to increase the score , however her team could not capitalize on the chances.

CSC scored first, after 13 minutes, and were running riot in the game , however they wasted a dozen chances before they added a second and secure victory.

Sabrina powered a shot into a top corner of the Jansenites goal for an opener and then had the simplest of tap-ins for her second.

With this win CSC added another trophy to its already impressive collection this year.

CSC Under-15 team set date for Cup final

CSC Girls under-15 team bulldozed past defending champions STC with an impressive 4-0 triumph to set a date with Jansenites in Thursday’s Final’s title clash of the 2007 SHF Under-15 Cup hockey tournament to be held at 4.00pm at the Delta Stadium.

Sabrina scored two goals within a span of four minutes as CSC proved too good for STC in what turned out to be a one-sided game.

CSC, a team relying more on young legs than experience, gave a ruthless display of power hockey in the final game to beat Crescent 4- 0 to confirm their place in the final.

CSC READY FOR SHF DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Ceylon Sports Club sprung no surprise in naming the squad for the SHF Division 1 Women’s League 2007, keeping with the tried and tested squad for the tournament commencing May 6. The squad had finished Champion in the recently concluded National Carnival for Division 1 Womens and had also finished third in the National under-21 tournament. Averaging only 18 years of age this is one of the youngest squad to represent CSC in a SHF National league.

Interestingly, Coach Ralph had expressed confidence in the young girls such as Esther Yen, Roxane Christel, Siti Nurasikin, Qurratu Lyzda, Nur Sabrina and Shakinah for their ‘tremendous talent’. They together with seniors Masdiana, Nursaliza and NorFariha will form the teams backbone.

While he was impressed with the physical fitness and “vigour” of the squad on the first day and observed that they had enthusiasm and zeal there was still hard work before the team plays it’s first Division 1 game on May 6. As the other teams consist of senior players and CSC needs to really play hard to finish champion.

CSC CAPTURE VESAKHI HOCKEY CARNIVAL 2007

Ceylon Sports Club recorded a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Khalsa Association to capture the Vesakhi Hockey Carnival 2007 tournament on Sunday 22 April at the Balestier Grounds.

CSC, the former champions, came from behind to overcome Khalsa. Taking some time to settle in, CSC did well to recover thanks mainly to the double strike by Muhd Fazli, who once again showed his effectiveness as one of CSC’s top stricker.

Khalsa was unable to build on the bright start, but gave a good account of itself. It had taken the lead through a field goal in the third minute.

Meanwhile, CSC took a commanding 3 -1 lead midway through the game. Khalsa came back with two quick goals to tie the game, however CSC captain Sharrudin scored the winning goal late on to make sure of the title.

This is the fourth title the teams have won this year

CSC SUPER-8 HOCKEY CARNIVAL WAS A GREAT SUCCESS

The CSC men’s team won the CSC Super-8 Hockey Carnival on Saturday 7 April at the CSC grounds beating the Old Rafflesian Association 1-0 for the championships.

The other teams playing in the Carnival were Neighbours Khalsa Association and Indian Association and teams from the Hollandse Club and Strongchem.

Playing in the final Ceylon Sports Club men’s team were keen to win the first Super-8 title organized by CSC, they made most of their opportunities and came away with the win despite ORA giving CSC a lot of problems. CSC were controlling most of the ball in the second half.

ORA will rue their two second half penalty corners and their inability to find a way past Yong Chiang the CSC custodian, the CSC keeper's performance today was outstanding, throwing himself around the box and blocking everything that came his way.

The game began in a flurry of action with both sides attempting to gain the advantage. Honors were shared initially , however CSC Captain Favil broke the deadlock when of a penalty corner he placed his shot at the bottom corner for CSC to lead ORA in the first half.

After the break the ORA came out firing, trying to pull back a goal. One goal down the ORA lifted their tempo, continually pounding the CSC defense. CSC stood strong though, turning those attacks into counter attacks of their own.. But with the CSC custodian in top form the game ended 1-0 in favor of host CSC.

It truly was a Fast 'n' Furious Super-8 tournament which was well organized.

The CSC boys under-18 team won the National under-18 league tournament

The CSC boys under-18 team won the National under-18 league tournament against SRC after a nail-biting final that CSC boys won on penalties 4-3. The game had ended 0-0 after extra time. Yong Chiang CSC custodian made the crucial save that earned CSC the title.

The CSC ladies Division 1 teams made a clean sweep

The CSC ladies Division 1 teams made a clean sweep of their tournament at the National Carnival for Division 1 womens yesterday. The CSC 'A' team beating CSC 'B' team in the all CSC finals 4-2. The girls who remained undefeated are now favourites to win the Division 1 league title which starts on Sunday May 6.

CSC Boys survive test of nerves to enter finals

Laksman Kumar and Mohd Fasli’s late winner helped CSC survive a big scare before chalking up a comfortable 3-1 victory over minnows SCC in the national under-18 boys semi-finals yesterday

Although CSC were not being anticipated to face much resistance from SCC, the opposition proved too hot to handle for them despite having the bulk of the play in the first half.

The topsy-turvy match at the CCAB under the blistering sun started with a goal for CSC in the 10th minute through Mohammad Fazri who scored off a move from the right.

CSC wasted a sitter when Mohammad Fazri missed the target with a reverse hit in the 16th minute, although he had goal wide open. In a counter-attack, stale-looking CSC let slip a soft equalizing goal that was scored of a deflection when the ball was hit across the goal by SCC left winger.

CSC extended their lead when Laksman Kumar bang in his first short corner goal in the 23rd minute of the game and before the SCC team could recover Mohd Fasli brilliantly connected to a cross from Captain Sharuddin the 30th minute to put CSC 3- up.

CSC heaved a sigh of relief as the final whistle was blown and will meet SRC in the Final this Saturday at Delta at 6.00pm.

“The team was really tired as this was their third competitive game in four days. They played for their school Yuhua Seconday on Thursday in the National Schools ‘B’ boys finals which they lost 1-0, yesterday they had a tough group game with SRC which they won 1-0 and today under the hot sun they did very well” said coach Favil.

CSC Girls register 3-2 win to finish third

Goalie Ester Yen’s vital save of a Crescent short corner in the last minute helped CSC Girls finish third in the National under-21 girls championship. Earlier striker Nurazlin Mohd Noor had given CSC a slim 3-2 lead.

Captain Masdiana and centre forward Nur Sabrina, while leading from the front, struck one each to register a trilling 3-2 win

Captain Masdiana had splendidly guided a beautiful cross from Eunice in the 16 minute to give CSC a first half lead. But on resumption of the second half Crescent struck from the short corner to level the score. CSC lead was restored by Nur Sabrina in the 61st minute with a neat flick to the far post after receiving a pass from Masdiana. Again Crescent equalized from yet another short corner.

With the score at 2-2 and both teams going for the winner, CSC striker Nurazlin Mohd Noor beat the Crescent goalie to the ball and scored the decisive goal of the match which went in favour of CSC 3-2.

”CSC girls have done it again, on Thursday they helped their school Teck Whye Secondary to the National school’s ‘B’ Girls trophy and today they beat a determined Cresent 3-2. Their next target will be the SHF Division 1 league title which starts on 14 April” said Manager Prem.

CSC fail in showdown for final

SRC and Teressians set up a repeat final in the National Under-21 hockey tournament when they edged their respective opponents CSC and Crescent at the Delta Stadium yesterday.

It was touch-and-go in both the semi-finals, as SRC overcame CSC 4-3 on penalties after the full game had ended 0-0, while Teressians also had to dig deep to overcome a gritty Crescent1-0.

It was a game CSC should have won convincingly but the inexperience CSC girls some only 14 years old just could not convert their numerous chances to finish off the game. The CSC custodian did not touch the ball throughout the game, that was how dominant the CSC girls were.

CSC put up a good fight and almost won it with the last shot of the game, but luck just did not shine on the CSC girls as the ball hit by forward Subrina hit the side board with the SRC goalie well beaten.

In the penalty shot out CSC lost 4-3 .

"We started off on a shaky note in the match, but the girls have improved tremendously in the tournament. I am happy and proud they did not let their parents, the club and coaches down," said Coach Favil on the young team.

CSC play Crescent for 3rd place on Sunday 25 March 07 at CCAB Bukit Timah at 3pm.

CSC GIRLS lose but still manage to enter semi-finals

Ceylon Sports Club were beaten 0-3 by SRC in their Final group match of the national Under-21 hockey tournament at the Delta Stadium on Sunday but they still advanced to the semi-finals and will play the same opponents for a place in the Grand finals..

CSC and Teressians were both tied with 22 points and SRC at 21 points before this group decider. But with Terressians winning their game and CSC losing the Group championship went to Terresssians and CSC finished the group rounds in third placing.

The pressure was on CSC to win the match against SRC to top the group rounds and they were let down by their inexperience and were 0-2 down before the break. Although there played better in the second half, another slip-up let SRC win 3-0.

CSC play SRC in the semi-finals on Sunday 18 March at 5.00pm at Delta Stadium..

“The pressure was on CSC and my girls did not have it easy and their inexperience allowed SRC to create a lot of chances. Unfortunately we had to rest our senior players who had a tough game in their Schools B Division game last week and that resulted in the lost. But we will be ready for the semis” said Manger Prem Singh.

CSC vs Crescent

The CSC girls under-21 braved the scorching sun to beat Cresent Girls 2-0 in a tough encounter to advance to the semi-finals-finals of the ongoing SHF under-21 ladies hockey tournament 2007.

In the match played at CCAB Bukit Timah last Saturday , the CSC girls dominated proceedings from the opening whistle.

CSC ladies captain led by example when she struck the lone goal in the first half after a brilliant solo move. Sabrina added a second late in the second half of a short corner move.

CSC girls, were clearly the better side and could have won by a bigger margin, but for profligacy. With the win over one of the favourites for the title CSC is now in the semis.

"We have been training hard for this game and are optimistic of making it to the finals," Masdiana said.

Both CSC teams are on course to make the semi-finals. The CSC Girls did well to hold tournament favourites T'dos Teressians 1-1 thus enhancing their chances to advance to the semi-finals.
