Darts

Ever since CSC's visionary convenor Eric Tan got his Darts team together in February 1999 they have been just been 'itching' to have a 'go'. That's probably the reason for their name, the 'CSC Sharks'. At least three of the squad members are also members of the SDA (Singapore Darts Association) Executive Committee. Jerome Turner is the Vice President, Jitendra is Assistant Treasurer, and Robert Gribbens a Committee Member. The team plays in Division 2 of the SDA. In their first tournament they finished third overall (March to June) The Sharks then participated in the Singapore Open 1999 , and were placed a joint 16th from among 40 entrants. They were also Overall Champions in the SDA National League 1999 (July to November ). It has been a fast climb to the top. For the knockout event CSC (Sharks) lost narrowly in the finals on 18 December 1999. Nevertheless, the Sharks have been promoted to Division 1 in the year 2000.CSC SHARKS... 2000.

The "CSC SHARKS" team comprises of club members from various professions. Despite their demanding work schedules, the SHARKS meet regularly on at least one day a week for training followed by an internal meeting among them. This routine not only allows for the team to train regularly, but also enables the members to remain closely knit and participate actively in internal discussions. In the efficient manner that the team functions, the dedication, spirit and commitment from the members are well over the norm.

This year, the team embarked on its annual competitive mode to take part in several National competitions. With the support from the club, the SHARKS participated in the tournament with their objectives well defined. The team comprises of the following members, namely: -

1) Jerome Turner (Captain)
2) Jitendra s/o Kantilal (Vice-Captain)
3) Kanan Packrisamy (Treasurer)
4) Hong Tong You
5) R. Selva Kumar
6) Lim So Boon
7) Alex Teo
8) Robert Gribben
9) Michael Wong
10) Balwant Singh
11) Mardianah Bte Mohd.
Convenor/Manager: Eric Tan

The SHARKS performance this year has been extremely inspiring so far. They emerged as Champions in the SDA League 2000. The SHARKS were simply the best during the entire tournament and they proofed the fact by remaining unbeaten throughout the league of ten teams. Not only did the players make us proud, but also with this convincing achievement, they had placed Ceylon Sports Club graciously on the Darts map of Singapore.

Next in line was the annual Singapore Recreational Club Inter-Club tournament held in July. Over the two-day event, the players were in their usual high spirits and showed exemplary skills darting against club teams from Singapore, Malaysia and Sabah. The five members who represented the club were, Jerome Turner (Captain), Alex Teo, Hong Tong You, Robert Gribben and Jitendra. Eric Tan (Convenor/Manager) and some of the other team members made an effort to be present to provide support to the playing members. The standard of the competition was very high. The players remained composed throughout the tournament and slowly eliminated their opponents one by one. Eventually, they reached the finals and had to play against the host themselves. With no doubt to the determination and skills of our players, the SHARKS impressed everyone at the venue by beating SRC 7 games to 2. The SHARKS have successfully placed CSC bolder on the map this time! The results have been furnished in table 'a' below.

Besides taking part in local competitions, the SHARKS also took part in the Royal Lake Club Merdeka Invitational Darts Tournament held in Kuala Lumpur in August earlier this year. The Tournament was a two-day event and it was played over the weekend. The members who represented CSC in this Tournament were, Jerome Turner (Captain), Jitendra, R. Selva Kumar, Hong Tong You and Ian Chan. With the intention to perform at their best the SHARKS pitted their darting skills against various teams from the states of neighbouring Malaysia. They played tremendously well to qualify for the Quarter-Final. The Sharks then played against Kelab PJ and went through to the Semi-Final where they had to pit their skills against Royal Ipoh Club. The games went on with both the teams darting at their best. But, as there can only be one winner, the SHARKS triumph over the opponents to play in the Finals. The SHARKS played against Kelab Klang and after a close battle they emerged as runners-up. What an impressive performance for the SHARKS who bagged the Silver! The results of the games have been furnished in table 'b' below.

Presently, the SHARKS are taking part in the annual SDA National League 2000. The tournament is reaching its final stages and the team is doing very well so far. The final result however would only be available in the next issue of the newsletter.

The SHARKS are planning to organise an Inter-Club Tournament some time early next year. The Tournament will be organised on a massive scale with participation from clubs all over Singapore and perhaps even from Malaysia. Details of the Tournament have not been finalised, but they will however be subject to approval and confirmation from the Management Committee.

The Club is also planning to organise an internal darts Tournament within this year among all CSC paid-up members. Details have not been finalised and the Tournament schedule would obviously depend on the number of members participating in the Tournament. Therefore, those who wish to participate in this Tournament may do so by expressing their interest to CSC via fax @ 299 9487 or alternatively conveying their participation via e-mail @ cscsing@cyberway.com.sg before 31 October 2000. Please also remember to furnish a copy of your interest to Eric Tan, Convenor-CSC Darts Committee.
